Amanda Cobbett suspends a singular second within the fleeting lives of fungi by stitching their likeness in thread. The textile artist images and gathers specimens that she brings again to her Surrey Hills-based studio, the place she finds fibers to match pale inexperienced lichens and golden chanterelles. Using a free-motion embroidery approach on a stitching machine, she then stitches a number of layers onto a chunk of dissolvable cloth that, as soon as the organism is full, is washed away to go away simply the mushroom or mossy bark intact. As a scroll via her Instagram reveals, the ensuing sculptures are so lifelike in colour, form, and dimension that it’s troublesome to tell apart the artist’s iterations from their counterparts.

Currently, Cobbett is making ready a group that can head to the Artful Craft exhibition at Make Southwest, which opens on April 2. (through Lustik)
