Mari Hamahira’s sushi seems like tender slices of tuna and creamy sea urchin, however its texture is nothing just like the gentle, rice-based bites. From tough slabs of stone, the artist carves lifelike nigiri and rolls of gunkan-maki which might be assembled into deceptively practical sculptures and garnished with scallion rings, wasabi, and tiny mounds of roe. The coloring of every work is derived solely from the fabric’s pure pigments, whether or not via smoothing and sprucing or combining powdered granules into new hues.

Mixed inside the delectable choices are extra unsettling items that embody human physique components like fingers, brains, and ears. A critique of consumption and wastefulness, the collection is in response to the artist’s work within the seafood trade, the place he witnessed creatures harvested for his or her meat after which subsequently thrown away with out being eaten.

Hamahira’s sculptures are on view via February 27 at Joshibi University of Art and Design, and you may see a lot of his stone-carving course of on Twitter. (through Spoon & Tamago)
